Making Stepping Stones out of Stumbling Blocks

One of the secrets in life is to make stepping stones out of stumbling blocks. There are times in life we find ourselves in situations we did not plan for such as a job loss, divorce or loss of a loved one. Or we just come to a place in our lives and say there is something more out there for me but I’m not sure what that is.

Whether by choice or by force, facing a major career or life transition can seem completely overwhelming and answering the question Now What? can cause much anxiety. But if you look at this juncture in life as a stepping stone and not a stumbling block you open up a whole new world of possibility and options. Re-starting or re-inventing can be an opportunity to get clear on who you really are and what you really want. Now What? can be an exciting journey of re-discovery, breaking through beliefs that no longer serve you and turning clarity into an action plan for a more fulfilling life.

If you are re-starting or re-inventing join us at the Women’s Empowerment Conference for a powerful workshop: Now What? 90 Days to a New Career or Life Direction and start creating your next stepping stone.

Commander, Cancer Survivor, and Empowered Woman

Life is what happens when you’re busy making other plans. – John Lennon in “Beautiful Boy (Darling Boy)”

The key motivator for developing the Women’s Empowerment Conference was to explore ways women could overcome barriers to career and financial success. As we began to look for inspired role-models to speak at our conference, we discovered Colonel Karen Gibson, and her amazing story, practically in our backyard at Fort Meade. Col. Gibson is the Commander of the U. S. Army’s 704th Military Intelligence Brigade, overseeing the use of cutting edge technology to protect our country.

During her service to her country, a cancer diagnosis abruptly canceled a planned deployment to Iraq. At that time Col. Gibson drew on the support of her family, her faith, and the Army Values and Warrior Ethos to fight the disease. Because of her experience, she continues to be a strong supporter of Relay for Life and cancer research and participates in cancer mentorship events. A native of Bozeman, MT, Col. Gibson is married to retired Lt. Col. Kim Chapman. Their daughter Kelly is following in her mother’s footsteps as a ROTC cadet in college, and their son Tom is currently in high school in Anne Arundel County.

We are pleased to have Col. Gibson come share her story as our keynote speaker at the Women’s Empowerment Conference luncheon!

Are You Living Life Backwards?

Often people attempt to live their lives backwards:
they try to have more things, or more money, in order to do more of what they want so they will be happier.

The way it actually works is the reverse.
You must first be who you really are, then, do what you need to do, in order to have what you want.
~Margaret Young

Easy to say, but very difficult for women to do. As women, we struggle to find balance amidst the stressors of life and rarely take time to reflect on our core values. Each decade brings new challenges and pages of the calendar flip so quickly that we careen through life’s transitions scrambling to react to ensure that the needs of our kids, our spouse, our boss, our friends, our co-workers are met, with little regard for our own.

As women, we must support each other in the challenge to move from being reactive to proactive. We must find ways to foster the quest to, as Margaret Young suggests, “first be who you you really are, then do what you need to do.” That process of self-reflection creates an empowered woman – one who will have what she wants and find true happiness…not in more things or more money, but in a life filled with purpose and direction.

As we developed the Women’s Empowerment Conference, we wanted to create an experience that could be a catalyst for women taking charge of their future. We enlisted inspiring examples of women who, when faced with challenges, created opportunities. We developed content that would enable women to refocus on their career and finances to facilitate a shift toward a proactive professional development plan. We created an environment that would enable women to support and encourage each other in the process. The experience, in essence, is designed to help women stop living their lives “backwards,” and encourage them to turn around and seize the great opportunities that lie ahead.
